APA Releases New White Paper on Jobs |
|
To most people outside the asphalt pavement industry, asphalt jobs are limited to paving crews. That is only a small part of the equation, however. An asphalt road could not be constructed without civil engineers, technologists, researchers, raw material suppliers, asphalt mix producers, truck drivers, equipment manufacturing workers, construction equipment distributors, and many others who work behind the scenes. The Asphalt Pavement Alliance makes that case in the new white paper Jobs in the Asphalt Pavement Industry: A Profile of the Men and Women Who Build Our Nation's Infrastructure. This document highlights the different jobs that are a part of asphalt road construction and the collective impact that the industry has on the economy as a whole.
The white paper is available from the Asphalt Pavement Alliance's new Web site at www.AsphaltRoads.org. View or download a copy of the white paper here.

TCC Fly-In Brings Over 400 Advocates to Washington |
|
More than 400 members of the transportation construction industry descended upon Washington recently urging Congress and their individual representatives to pass a six-year highway reauthorization bill. The annual Transportation Construction Coalition Fly-In, which was held May 25-26, consisted of one day of legislative briefings followed by a day of lobbying visits. Attendees heard from Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), ranking member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee; House Ways and Means Committee member Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair Jim Oberstar (D-Minn.) and Rep. John Mica (D-Fla.), the Committee’s ranking minority member. Bill Schneider, CNN’s political analyst, also spoke to the group. There was consensus on two points: the need for a highway bill and the difficulty associated with funding such legislation. Fly-In attendees visited with individual members of Congress and their staff the following day. NAPA would like to thank those who came to Washington to participate in the TCC Fly-In. If you were not able to attend, remember that most members will be at home in their district offices following the July 4th holiday and for August recess. Keep the pressure on and remind them that transportation funding means local jobs. (Above: members of the Colorado delegation meet with Senators Udall and Bennett.)
